Highland heartbreak for Kelso

HAVING won the South Schools Indoor Tournament, Kelso High School represented the district in the Scottish Schools Cup in Perth with five other schools from all over Scotland.

Competing against Mary Erskine School, Strathallan, George Watsons College, Jordanhill High School and Robert Gordons College, the Tweedsiders came extremely close to reaching the final with two excellent performances in their round robin games.

A hard-fought tussle against Mary Erskine’s ended 6-6, leaving the Kelso girls needing a win against Strathallan, who had already beaten MES 4-2, to make it through to the final. The first half was very tight and Strathallan were in front at the break having scored twice, with only one from Gina Ramsay in reply for Kelso. In the second half, Sinead Rae in goal made some excellent saves. With the score at 4-4 and time running out, Kelso were awarded a penalty corner from which they scored, only for the goal to be disallowed denying them a chance of taking on George Watsons in the final.

They then had to play off against the runners-up in the other group, Robert Gordons, with only 15 minutes break. The match was another close affair with the Northeners edging it
6 -5.

Kelso: Sophie Aitchison, Rhona Forbes, Claire Hill, Kirsty Logan, Rachel Potts, Sinead Rae, Gina and Lucy Ramsay, Jeanie Robertson, Jennie Robson and Kirsty Veitch.
