Hawick and Wilton 1st XI hosted St Boswells on Thursday night in what turned out to be a thrilling Border 20/20 Cup match.

St Boswells chose to bat after winning the toss, and were a wicket down after 11 runs when Greg Baillie struck, bowling Jamie Glover. Danger man Steven Broom came to the crease and punished good and bad balls for a quick 58 off 32 balls, before Benny Hartop clean-bowled him.

Elliot Ruthven was also adding runs slowly at the other end until he skied one off Hartop, Andrew Johnston taking the catch.

Some suicidal running saw the dismissal of Scott Turnbull, leaving St Boswells on 105-4.

Christo Beukes, making his return after a year out of cricket, took two wickets, clipping Rory Elms off-stump then taking a returned catch off Kathryn White.

St Boswells finished on 135-6.

Hawick looked to score runs quickly, with Bruce Mactaggart hitting a quickfire eight before being caught out. This led to a mini collapse which left Hawick on 9-3. However, steady batting from skipper Phil Mactaggart and man of the match Beukes repaired the Hawick innings and they looked in good stead to push the Villagers to the wire. Mactaggart was finally out, being caught at point for 26. This brought in Neil Storey who was punishing anything outside off-stump until he was adjudged lbw for 13.

With 26 required off the last over, Hawick needed something special from Beukes who was batting exceptionally well, and when he struck the first ball for six, Hawick knew they might just cause an upset. However, it wasn’t to be as Beukes skied the next ball for a great innings of 53. ]

Allan Moffat and Ali Weir were left to score two and five respectively before the 20 overs were up.

Hawick finished on 120-7, 16 runs short of what would have been a memorable victory against a very strong St Boswells side.
