An outstanding knock from Ewan Hair gave Hawick an excellent win over promotion-chasing Heriot’s on Saturday.
The Teries were put into bat by their visitors and got off to a poor start as Ronan Alexander and Allan Moffat were bowled in successive deliveries to leave them 9 for 2.
However, Gary Alexander (25) and Hair set about the rebuilding task and punished anything loose and struck several boundaries in a stand of 64.
Phil Mactaggart was next to the crease and he made 27 in a vital 52-run partnership with Hair.
Youngster Evan Alexander and Ryan Johnston almost helped Hair to his maiden century, but he fell 10 runs short in what was an excellent innings that definitely deserved to be a ton.
However, Hawick were all out for 175 and knew it would be a very close affair.
In reply, the visitors got off to a steady start, but too many bad deliveries meant the openers, Jones and Butt, put on 62 for the first wicket, which Ronan Alexander claimed after an excellent catch on the boundary by Mactaggart.
Several dropped catches looked like it could cost Hawick dear, but they kept working away and got their reward when an excellent diving catch at square leg by Morgan Tait off the bowling of Gary Alexander left Heriot’s on 98 for 2 with key man Litster gone.
Stuart Hair deservedly had Jones caught in the slips for 36 before a mix-up meant a simple run out which saw the Goldenacre men now on 103 for 4. Another outstanding catch off the bowling of Gary Alexander, this time from Ewan Hair, swung the match in favour of the hosts.
With the run rate in favour of Heriot’s, Hawick had to keep taking wickets, and they did, with Johnston picking up a deserved caught and bowled.
And Alexander collected up another three wickets, leaving the visitors 33 runs short.
