A QUARTET of Borders pool players are all set to travel to Blackpool this weekend for the 2011 World Pool Championships.
Following his Borders qualifying victory, Ian McCombe will begin the quest of the local lads when he takes up the challenge in the preliminaries, early doors, hoping to reach the first round proper.
He joins evergreen Scott Bowers and consistent Craig Reid who both start in the international team events before the singles.
This year will mark Bowers’ second Worlds and Craig’s debut. In the World Masters Scott Simpson joins the field as his great season pays dividends.
Bowers told TheSouthern: “This is a big boost for the region, doubling the amount of players going from last year, and augurs well for the future.
Unfortunately, fast improving lady Sharon Anderson, being the first woman selected from the area, couldn’t attend due to previous commitments, but as she is the only lady in the league it was a great achievement to be selected through the trials process and cannot be far away from her first cap.
Junior coaching will be starting soon at Reivers Sports Bar, Galashiels, run in conjunction with the Borders development coaching staff.
Bowers added: “Hopefully we can find more players with the potential to progress to international level in time and to continue to improveg the game at all levels in the Borders.”
