GRANT Ferguson provided a home win in the Peebles Sprint, defeating current Scottish cross champion Gareth Montgomery and Commonwealth Games cyclist Evan Oliphant.

British Cycling Academy member Ferguson, 18, and Montgomery were neck and neck until the home favourite broke free with a lap to go to take the victory in the event, which forms part of the TweedLove Bike Festival.

Speaking from Peebles’ Bspoke Cycles shop, Ferguson said: “The pack stayed together for the first half, gradually lifting the pace.

“Then I saw Gareth go and I jumped to follow his wheel. We built up a solid lead and it came down to last-lap sprint.

I was really pleased to win in Peebles in front of the home crowd on my Boardman bike.”

A field of around 40 started the town centre criterium race run as a Belgian-style Kermesse event.

A family ride and women’s sprint were also held on the night.
