FOR four Borders youngsters the badminton season began early with the Glasgow School of Sport Under-13s tournament.
The summer training paid off for two of our young Scottish development squad stars.
Annabel Young made it through to the finals of the mixed doubles with the awesome Matthew Grimley, only to lose.
While Robbie Patterson managed to fulfil one of his targets by finally beating Glen Lewington in a terrific three-setter 14-20, 22-20, 21-18 which helped him to get through to the quarter-final rounds, only to face eventual winner Matthew Grimley.
Unfortunately, Annabel’s partner for the doubles had to pull out due to severe stomach pains halfway through one of their games.
She also did not manage to overcome Basia Grodynskie in her singles pool. Robbie’s doubles and mixed games showed some very promising partnership play, but not enough to see him and his partners into the KO rounds.
Also representing the Borders development squad, Lizzie Edmonson and Linsey Young worked very hard and showed improved play, but did not manage to come through to the final rounds from their pool matches in the singles, doubles or mixed.
Borders coach Lynn Young told TheSouthern: “At times when watching this competition, which boasted several Scottish development squad and Glasgow school of sport players, you would have thought you were watching Under-21 players, let alone 9-12 year olds.
“This is a very good start to the season, with some great play and a few areas to improve on – things will only get better.”
