MINTO’S golfers have reached the halfway point of the winter season in fine spirits after one of the best autumns on record and with the course continuing to play well.
The ladies’ 10-hole sessions on Wednesday mornings have attracted consistently large groups of players and have seen one of the lowest ever scores, an excellent nett 32 for 10, from Freda Robertson.
Club captain John Law is the current leader of the Seniors’ Winter League with 36.5 points from five events. Webmaster Duncan Shiell has the same number of points, but from seven events.
There have also been large and enthusiastic entries for the monthly Mixed Fun Texas Scramble, with the December event won by Susan Law, Jill Woolfenden, Michael McFarlane and Duncan Shiell, with a nett 40.7 against par of 50. A high point of this month’s competition was the hole-in-one Ken Auckland achieved on the 17th, but, unfortunately for Ken, that day’s competition was being played to winter greens!
Christmas cheer was much in evidence at the ladies’ Christmas lunch, which was followed by a light-hearted quiz on the rules of golf, in which a number of teams distinguished themselves with high scores. It also enlivened the Christmas Fair, organised by ladies’ captain Gill Cartwright and her committee with help from some of the senior gents. The fair raised more than £850.
