GALA travelled to Peffermill for their first taste of East League Division Three action on Saturday where they faced Carlton 3rd XI.
Stephen Halls won the toss and on a damp wicket asked Carlton to bat first. Robbie Pringle and debutant Dinesh Tharanga kept the pining batsmen under control with a tight opening spell as Balfour and Majundar found runs hard to come by.
Pringle eventually made the first breakthrough in the 10th over when he yorked Majunder with the score on 13.
The introduction of the Gala spinners moved the game forward with a flurry of wickets as Balfour gave Neil Crooks a return catch, Bij drove Ormiston to Kenny Paterson at mid-off and Graeme Ormiston held onto a fine one-handed catch above his head to dismiss Newman as Carlton slumped to 19 for 4.
Everett and Shah began a fightback with Everett particularly keen to use his feet to the spinners, however with the score on 37 he left his crease once too often, ran past a Crooks delivery and Duncan Millar took the easy stumping chance. Shah followed two runs later, edging Ormiston to Millar, while Arvind and Allardice both went for ducks. E. Everett became Millar’s second stumping victim before Tharanga returned to the attack to end the innings, as Murdoch chipped to Robbie Pringle at mid-wicket.
In reply Gala struggled to get to grips with the wicket and the awkward low bounce but Stephen Halls and David Boland took the score to 16 before Boland was trapped leg before for 11.
Ormiston followed soon after, unluckily bowled off his pads without scoring, while Crooks scooped a full toss to square leg for 8, but Halls stood firm through the innings to see Gala home to a seven-wicket win with 22 not out.
