ON AN overcast Monday evening, Gala Under-15s opened their season with a league and Scottish Cup double header against Kelso/Manderston.
Gala opened the batting with Josh Irvine and Jack Halls and after a slow start the innings gained momentum. After the fall of Halls’ wicket, Irvine was joined at the crease by Robbie Pringle. The runs continued to flow and after two mighty blows for six, Irvine was retired on 55.
Dean Moir replaced Irvine and scored six before being bowled. Craig Hancock was next in as Gala continued to score well, however, a good catch by Greg Davidson dismissed Pringle for 19.
Liam Rutherford replaced Pringle, but did not trouble the score, and Ryan Shaw saw out the 20 overs with Hancock to leave Gala on a creditable 113 for 4.
Kelso started their reply brightly, taking six runs off the first over, but a wicket for Moir in the third over of the match, and two wickets for Robbie Pringle in the sixth, slowed the run rate for Kelso.
Thomas Roberts made a valiant attempt to bring Kelso back into the game with 31 runs but a wicket for Caitlin Ormiston, caught by Liam Rutherford, and two for Irvine, one to a very good catch by Jack Halls, kept Gala in the driving seat and after their 20 overs the Kelso innings finished on 90 for 6.
