Borders boxers have been punching well and truly above their weight over the last two weekends at the Scottish Novice Championships.

Competition took place at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports facility, Motherwell where well over 300 boxers took part in the event (the biggest Amateur Boxing Competition in Britain) with 10 travelling up from the Galashiels club and two from Hawick over the two weekends.

For the Galashiels competitors the opening day was a disappointing one with early defeats for Stuart McGurk, Sean Connolly, James Duncanson and Ewan Jones while Colin Brown came in at 0.4kg over his weight category meaning he could play no part in the competition.

The tide turned the following Saturday with convincing victory’s for Arix Ross, Jess Stone and Davids Lukjanovs in their semi-final bouts.

Those victory’s meant that they joined Stuart Nicholls and Rory Middlemiss in the following day’s Finals.

Sunday saw Davids Lukjanovs take gold for the Gala Club in the youth 1998 born 60kg weight, Jess Stone (Galashiels 1st female boxer) took gold in her Elite female 60kg final in impressive fashion and there were silver medals for Arix Ross(1998 born 60kg), Stuart Nicholls (Elite 52kg) and Rory Middlemiss (2000 born 60kg) who all boxed in close finals bouts.

Club spokesperson Danny Kelly said: “Galashiels Boxing Club would like to Congratulate all boxers for their hard work and commitment in the run up to these Championships.

“It is credit to them and all their coaches, who also put in a lot of time and effort, that the club can compete at this level.”

At the same event Hawick welterweight Jack Purvis’s unbeaten record remained intact after he won his second Scottish title at the Motherwell venue. Purvis scored a unanimous win over Port Glasgow’s Callum Simpson and now has a crack at the intermediate title in his sights. Speaking after the win, the 17-year-old said: “I loved every minute of the fight and the whole weekend.

“It was a tough fight against a good opponent. I’m delighted.”

Tom Robson, also from the Hawick club, knocked Steven Price from Glasgow’s Forsyth’s Gym out in five seconds of the first round in Saturday’s semi-final and on Sunday he lost the final against Kirk Smith from Cardenden by unanimous points decision.

Purvis boxes Reece Porter from the Western District’s Rob Roy club in Glasgow on Sunday.
