Borders’ teams step up to the crease

It’s almost summertime and the sounds of leather on willow will be reverbarating around the region this weekend as the 2015 cricket season gets under way.

Seven Borders teams are involved in East of Scotland Cricket League action with Gala, Kelso and St Boswells now all competing in Division One. On Saturday, they play Edinburgh South, Dunnikier and West Lothian respectively, with the Tweedsiders the only team playing at home.

In Division Three, Selkirk travel to Haddington, while Peebles are on the road to play Murrayfield DAFs in Division Five.

Hawick & Wilton found that they have much work to do ahead of the season after a disappointing result away to Ponteland in a friendly fixture last weekend. However, it did bring vital time at the crease for many of the Teri batsman ahead of their Division Six campaign, which starts at home on Saturday when local rivals Melrose are the visitors.

Elsewhere, Langholm got their season going with a seven-wicket defeat at home to St Michael’s on Sunday. This weekend, the Castleholm men entertain Edenhall in their first Eden Valley League game of the season.
