A TRIO of talented Borders swimmers have been selected to compete for Scotland at a home international next month, writes Fiona Scott.

Kelso Swimming Club members Lucy Hope, 15, Ryan Brown, 14 and Kirsty Armstrong, 12, all train with the Borders Elite Swimming Team (BEST) under the expert tutilage of Alex Jordan and his staff. And, earlier this week, the trio learned that they had been chosen to swim for the Scottish team at the WISE (Wales, Ireland, Scotland & England) Schools International, to be held in Sunderland on November 17 and 18.

Team members are selected on their performances at the 2012 Scottish Schools Championships which were held in East Kilbride in January.

The swimmers can only contest two swims each at this meet. Kirsty was placed second in the 13-14yrs 100m butterfly and first in the 200m individual medley.

Lucy won both the 15-16yrs 100 and 200m backstroke with Scottish schools national records. Both girls did well as they were at the bottom of their age bracket.

Ryan was placed first in both the 13-14yrs 200m butterfly and 200m individual medley.

Coach Jordan believes that medals at last season’s Scottish Open Championships for Lucy and for Kirsty and Ryan at last season’s British Age Group Championships will stand all the Borders swimmers in good stead for this competition. He told TheSouthern: “I’m delighted for BEST, Kelso Swimming Club and, above all, Lucy, Ryan and Kirsty on their selection to the team.

“All three have excelled in the pool this year and thoroughly deserve to have been selected.

“Achieving the vast number of accolades they have in the past season bears testimony to their hard work and commitment.”
