nine medals were scooped by Borders athletes in the East District Cross-country Championships in Cupar last weekend.

The impressive haul included five for Moorfoot Runners, while Gala Harriers’ athletes collected four medals at the Fife venue.

On a frozen rutted course of hay stubble and tractor tracks, Selkirk-based Zaynah Aziz took silver in the girls’ under-13 race over 3.2km, and combined with Fiona Grant in ninth and Mairi Wallace in 12th, the trio took team silver for the Moorfoot club.

The Gala Harriers’ under-15 boys also lifted team silver, with Nathan Cox coming home in second for individual silver ahead of Thomas Otton (11th) and Gavin Bryson (12th).

Scout Adkin, after a tentative start over 5km, picked her way through the under-20 women’s field for a bronze for Moorfoot and Gala’s Louise Mercer showed a return to form for bronze in the under-17 race over the same course.

With support from Kerry Sandilands (ninth) and Karen Maxwell (17th), the Gala girls picked up another team silver.

The Moorfoot under-17 men, the three Js – Jacob Adkin, John McLean and Jack Stanners – had a ding-dong race among themselves for the individual bronze medal over 6.4km course.

Adkin turned an eight-metre advantage over Selkirk-based John McLean into an eight-metre deficit by going briefly off-course with 1km to go and couldn’t quite get back to John, who held on well to take the bronze.

Jack Stanners wasn’t far behind in fifth in what was a dominant team gold for the Moorfoot boys.

Gala Harriers senior men finished 11th team overall, while Edinburgh AC’s Sue Ridley from Peebles was 17th in the senior women’s race which helped her team to gold.
