Archers experience wind of change

SEVERAL guest archers were welcomed to the field on Sunday as Ettrick Forest Archers held their second monthly clout competition of the season.

As members arrived at Thirladean for the noon start the sun was showing off, quite frankly, and there was not a puff of wind, so hopes were high for some cracking scores.

But, as they lined up to take their first round of shots, the wind didn’t just say hello, it began to signal its arrival at the top of its voice.

As the day wore on, the gusts ranged from barely there to we’re-not-in-Kansas-any-more-Toto from arrow to arrow, so judging elevation and distance was fairly tough.

However, there were some notable performances as some archers stepped up to the mark.

In the ladies’ 120-yard competition, Elaine Pearson found herself in the unfamiliar position of third, thanks to the welcome visit of old friends of the club – Betty Wylie and Elaine Smith – who both enjoy shooting at the field.

But Elaine topped the club members’ list, chased all the way by new archer Ev Craig, who hit her first competition clout.

And new junior Sam Mackay matched that honour – only a week or two after completing his beginners’ course.

As for the men (shooting at 180 yards), the Royal Company’s Adair Anderson enjoyed a late burst of form to take top spot, closely followed by Mike Pearson and Jim Craig – who made the long drive up from York worth it by claiming his best club placing to date – and a fantastic eight best ends.

Results: Ladies – 1, Betty Wylie 46 hits, 108 score, 0 clouts; 2, Elaine Smith 38, 92, 1; 3, Elaine Pearson 36, 88, 2; 4, Ev Craig 23, 61, 1; 5, Helen Ogilvie 18, 31, 0.
