GALASHIELS slalom paddler Alice Haining had her best ever competition result at the weekend in the Premier Ranking Canoe Slalom event held on the World Championships site at Holme Pierrpont, near Nottingham.
Alice, pictured, who still competes under the Selkirk banner, managed an excellent third place. The only two competitors placed ahead of her are both senior paddlers in the UK’s Olympic potential squad.
With this result, Alice maintains her position at number one in the junior ranking places for the 2011 season – a place she has held since mid-May.
The other significant benefit of that performance sees her gaining a wildcard place for both senior and under-23 selection events next spring.
At only 17, with another year in the under-18 age category, this is a tremendous result for the youngster and it establishes her place as the best junior paddler in the UK.
These events will be held on the new Olympic course at Lea Valley, just north of London, and promises an exciting and challenging year ahead.
This weekend sees Alice competing in the Scottish National Championships at Grandtully on the River Tay, where medal hopes must be high.
