Turf Talk: Mastering the Welsh National

THE Coral Welsh National finally gets the go ahead this Saturday, let’s hope the weather relents.

This historic Grade 3 chase over 3 ¾ miles can be a bit of a slog, the ground is often heavy at this time of year, but its record of winners not only includes Grand National types but also the occasional Gold Cup horse too including the likes of Burrough Hill Lad, Cool Ground and most recently Synchronised.

This year’s renewal doesn’t strike me as containing anything of that ability but, in Master Overseer, I see a typical out and out stayer who is certainly at the right end of the handicap.

At 14/1 I’m quietly confident about last year’s Midlands National winner running well. For a 10 year old he is certainly lightly raced, having only had 17 runs in his career, winning seven.

Fingers crossed that he turns up and gives us a belated Christmas present.
