A RACE I always look forward too and one that has proved a good race for me in the past is the Beverley Bullet. It always attracts a decent field for a listed contest and is aptly named as it always manages to attract plenty of bullet like speed balls to the track. There is also some good action at Bath and Chester though the highlight card is definitely Sandown and with some listed action at Newton Abbot there is even something for the summer twig hoppers so there is a bit for everyone.
A decent looking fillies and mares contest and one in which I would be disappointed if Clinical could not get back to winning ways. She has faced a couple of tougher tasks than this on her last couple of outings which have come in the Nassau and the Windsor Forest. She already has a group 3 win to her name when beating Joviality at Epsom back in June and a multiple listed winner also she just has a bit of class over these fillies who are mostly trying to prove themselves better than handicappers. She should appreciate this drop in trip and I would hope she will be ridden more positively to expel any fear of her being dropped in and not quite having things for her up front as she potentially has on her last two starts.
A couple of runners make appeal in this race, firstly Man Of Action. I used to heavily doubt his staying ability but he proved last time out at Newmarket he can get this trip no problems. The problem on that occasion was not only the improving winner but that he was sent to the front too early. He has displayed a sharp turn of foot in the past and has often be unleashed much later in his races and if they can hold onto him a little longer and bring him with a little later a challenge he should be seen to better effect this time around.
Second of interest is Valiant whom I think is well worth forgiving a run last time out. He was tackling a step up in trip to 13 furlongs from 10 previously for the firs time and though he gave the impression a step up in trip was on the radar, on this occasion, under much softer conditions than he has encountered before and stepping up to group company it all proved a little too much. Having had a short break he returns here to handicap conditions where he previously looked very progressive when winning well at York in what looks a decent contest despite the small field. This only his fourth race course appearance he still has lots of potential and there should be further improvement in him.
In the Beverley Bullet it should pay to give Masamah another chance. Dropping back from group one company he will find this an easier task than he had on his plate in the Nunthorpe last time out. He raced in the nearside/centre group showing up early in the blinkers and it proved not the place to be as the first four home were all to the far side and the near side runners came home in slow motion. I believe he will turn the form around with Dinkum Diamond for their meeting at Nottingham now a lot better treated and his run in the King George makes him a hard horse to oppose. If he gets his way to the fore early then he is going to be hard to catch around here and he looks the pick.
Rex Imperator has made his way into this column before and this conditions event looks a chance for him to get his head in front and keep his career on track. He dropped back to five furlongs last time out at York and showed more than enough speed but found himself with a horrendous trip and never got anywhere near a challenging position finishing with loads of running in the tank. He was travelling strongly into the final two but from there the doors just never opened and he had to sit and suffer a blocked path, when he did finally get out it was too late and he just finished with plenty left. Previously his undoing was the fact he pulled too hard at Newmarket so he needs to settle better this time with the extra distance. He was devastatingly impressive at Windsor at the end of June and this conditions event looks a good step for him as he progresses onto better things.
