TRAINEE jockey Ross Wilson from Peebles took the top honours at last Wednesday’s installation night horse racing event at Peebles Golf Course.
The 19-year-old won the most prestigious race on the evening, the Beltane Bell, a revival of an ancient race which used to take place from Nether Horsburgh to Peebles. Since 1913 the trophy used has been a replica of the Liberty Bell at Philadelphia, presented to the festival by Peebles expatriates in the US.
Also on Wednesday night, Selkirk’s Sam Coltherd pulled off an impressive victory in the Stuart Smith Cup. Riding his own horse, Grace, the 13-year-old chased and passed Gala’s Gary Beaumont to take the victory.
