Gary Berridge upset the odds – and his brother Liam – to take the 127th Tradesman’s Handicap on board My Way during another successful two days of racing at Hawick Common Riding.
My Way won by half a length from hot favourite Everyday I’m Shuffling, who had the other Berridge on board, and last year’s winner Volare with Wayne Hogg.
My Way had been gambled in from 2/1 to 4/6, but Volare set the early pace, with Everyday I’m Shuffling some 10 lengths behind as they reached the bell with one lap to go.
On the home straight, Volare tired and My Way made its move to give Langholm trainer Tony Irvine, his wife Lorna and owners R. and N. Hyslop victory.
The first race of Friday, the Emtelle & Dobbie & Michie Handicap, was run over one mile and saw a Hawick winner with Sam’s Secret coming home a very easy winner over Irish runner Back On Top, with Band of Gold third.
The Irish contingent enjoyed the first of five winners in the Skipper Rum Handicap with Cruise Ship getting the better of Burnie Brae to win by half a length.
Friday’s action was concluded with the Barclay’s Flex Handicap and from a field of eight, Catch A Cloud won with plenty in hand.
Saturday saw underfoot conditions change due to the rain, and also witnessed a reversal of positions as Burnie Brae defeated Cruise Ship in the opening On Course Bookmakers and Ken Hope Garage Handicap.
Irish raider Grey But Stable took the Buccleuch Handicap with warm favourite Everyday I’m Shuffling again just failing to get up on the line.
The mile-long Ferguson & Aitkin Ltd James Bell Handicap saw Catch A Cloud complete a weekend double by putting his six rivals to the sword with great ease.
And Irish eyes were smiling once more when Little Man got up to take the the New Delhi Bar & Restaurant Handicap.
The ceremonial races over the two days saw wins for Stephen Gray, Grant Huggan (3), Josh Farmer, Ben Graham, Hamish McNeil and Karen Scott.
