Villagers catch Teries napping in cup game

Hawick Legion Rovers 2

St Boswells 5

COLLIE CUP FIRST ROUND

ST BOSWELLS started brightly in this cup encounter and with four minutes gone took the lead.

Ashley Powell fired in a shot that was blocked by Rovers keeper James Gillespie, but Darren Hague cracked home a shot as the ball broke loose.

Three minutes later, Powell put the visitors further ahead, polishing off a darting run with a well-placed shot.

In the 17th minute, Mark Philbin put Rovers back in the hunt when beating St Boswells keeper Michael McLaren with a well-struck free kick.

The lively Powell then twice went close to adding to St Boswells’ tally, while at the other end, Sean Solley was just off-target with a header, connecting with an inch-perfect Chay Caldwell cross.

After McLaren had kept Rovers at bay with a fine save from Mason Clamp, the Villagers were robbed of a goal by the woodwork when a lobbed Powell effort rebounded off the bar.

In the 72nd minute, St Boswells scored again when Sean Pringle found the net with a cross-cum-shot.

Within minutes, Rovers pulled a goal back. Ryan Law broke through the visitors defence and drove in a shot that McLaren parried.

The alert Lee Sanderson was on hand to tuck away the rebound.

St Boswells, however, hit back to restore their two-goal lead through a counter Andy Swinton strike.

A minute from time, Hague put Rovers into further arrears.
