Uniteds in battle

Chirnside United 4

Hawick United 4 (aet: Chirnside won 4-2 on penalties)

SOUTH CUP THIRD ROUND

IN WHAT turned out to be a real battle of the Uniteds, Chirnside started in high-flying style by netting two early goals.

Hawick then reduced the leeway through a Ross Scott strike, but Chirnside hit back to score again.

Kevin Strathdee reduced the leeway, beating the Chirnside keeper with a well-struck angled drive.

Hawick kept up the good work and Strathdee notched an equaliser when tucking away a Scott pass.

With no further addition to the scoring, the match went into extra time. In the first half, Chirnside edged in front, but battling Hawick came raging back and in the last minute of the second period, Strathdee snatched a last-gasp equaliser, as well as completing his hat-trick.

It was now left to penalties to bring about a result and Chirnside came out on top by rattling away four, while Hawick stuck away two.
