Tweedsiders slip up when seconds away from victory

Ormiston 2

EOS FIRST DIVISION

WITH both United and Ormiston having drawn six games in the league so far this season it was a banker bet this match was going to a draw too.

Kelso had their noses in front twice in the game only to be denied a win by a last-minute header by the home side.

Ormiston started with some purpose and striker Richard Farnie shot high and wide from the edge of the box and then headed wide from a long throw-in from full back Kevin Barr within the first five minutes. United striker Des Burnett then latched on to a through ball and after avoiding a challenge from Ormiston’s Colin Clancy shot straight at keeper Mark Peacock.

Both teams were down to 10 men in the 34th minute when United’s Mark Lockhart and Ormiston’s Clancy came to blows and referee Michael Gill had no alternative to send both off.

The game reached the hour mark and Kelso managed to go in front. A good run and cross by Damien McNulty on the right found substitute Chris Black at the back post and the tall striker made no mistake with a right foot shot past the outstretched Mark Peacock.

United could have made it two a few minutes later when Jason Coles sent a great through ball to Burnett but with only the keeper to beat the no 9 skewed the ball past the left hand post. United keeper David Simmonds was then called into action when he had to dive acrobatically to his right to prevent a 25 yard shot from Craig Fisher hitting the net.

Ormiston made it 1-1 after a catalogue of errors in the United defence.

A harmless cross from the left into the box by Craig Smith saw Paul Dumma slip when going for the ball and this in turn caught Black by surprise, the ball hitting him on the arm and going into the net.

United thought they had won the game in the 87th minute when a long throw-in from Black was headed out by the Ormiston defence only to set up Stuart Harker with a perfect looping header over the keeper’s head and into the top corner. Then with only seconds remaining Ormiston equalised when again a cross from the left by Craig Smith was sent high to the back post and substitute Simon Heyes was first to react to head high in the net.

Kelso United: D. Simmonds, J. McCutcheon, S. Angus (J. Milner), P. Dumma, S. Harker, D. McNulty, J. Coles, S. Tait, D. Burnett, M. Lockhart, C. Bell (C. Black).
