Edinburgh University 2 Hawick Royal Albert 0
EOS QUALIFYING LEAGUE CUP
UNIVERSITY made the early running in this East of Scotland League Qualifying Cup encounter and with nine minutes gone, sailed into the lead.
On being fed by a Paul Sutherland pass, Kohei Habata wove his way in from the left and drove an angled shot into the net.
After Albert keeper Andy Jack had denied the students a second in keeping out a Callum Murray shot, University number one Mark Tait was put to the test in dealing with a Paul Brown effort following good play by Nicky Cairns.
Within minutes of this Hawick had a great opportunity to get on level terms. Following a long Jack kick out, Graeme Young set up Michael McKenzie but the Albert midfield man shot straight at Tait.
For the remainder of the first half the Albert gave as good as they got against their premier league opposition.
The students began the second period in sprightly fashion and Jack Guthrie came near to putting the Peffermill side further ahead in driving a shot into the side netting.
Dan Ward and Murray then fluffed chances for the University within minutes of each other.
Back came Hawick and on meeting a Cairns corner kick in a crowded goalmouth, McKenzie hooked a shot over the bar.
In the 71st minute however, the Albert fell further behind.
Ward rattled in a low shot that the diving Jack reached with an outstretched hand but the ball spun into the net.
No more goals were to be conjured up but both sides were to end up with ten men.
Albert’s Young, as well as the Universities Tim Rawlings, both being red carded following a clash.
