Rovers recover to grab all three points

Peebles Rovers 2

Ormiston 1

EoS FIRST DIVISION

MAURICE GORDON reports from Whitestone Park

ROVERS came from behind to secure a narrow but well-deserved win over Ormiston in an entertaining encounter.

However, the hosts certainly made it hard work for themselves by missing several scoring opportunities over the piece and could so easily have won by a bigger margin.

Peebles were the first to pose a threat, with Gary Knox and Craig Edgar both going close. But it was Ormiston who opened the scoring after 19 minutes when a defence-splitting pass from Craig Fisher picked out Scott McCarry, who flicked the ball over the diving John Nisbet.

Both goalkeepers were kept busy. First James McQueen in the visitors’ goal managed to keep out a blistering shot from Edgar, before Nisbet brought off a couple of fine saves to foil McCarry and Richard Fairnie.

Shortly afterwards, Edgar seemed almost certain to score with a free kick from 20yds until McQueen pulled off a brilliant save at full stretch.

Just before half-time, Steven Galloway set off on an excellent run down the left before he crossed the ball to Edgar, who somehow managed to miss the target with a shot from close in.

Peebles were the first to show after the break and, from a Galloway free kick, McQueen foiled Edgar yet again.

At the other end, a Graham Nisbet through-ball sent Fairnie racing into the Peebles box, but his low shot from 16yds was well saved by the diving Rovers keeper.

Although Peebles were now getting the upper hand in the second half, there were few clear-cut scoring chances at both ends, until they deservedly got back on level terms. Peter Conaghan slipped the ball across to the in-rushing Greig Shortreed, who blasted it into the roof of the Ormiston net.

McQueen foiled Knox with an excellent save before Rovers scored the winner – Conaghan beating McQueen all ends up with a cracking shot from 16yds.

Three minutes later, Shortreed was sent off after collecting a second yellow card and the visitors pushed to equalise, but it was not to be and the hosts collected full points.

Peebles Rovers thanked Caledonia Kilt Hire of Peebles for sponsoring this match.
