SOUTH CUP FIRST ROUND

LEITH ATHLETIC progressed to the next stage of the South Challenge Cup, with a comfortable win against Peebles Rovers at Telford College Playing Fields.

The scoring was opened after just 28 seconds when a Lewis Cairns through ball found Stephen Barrie. Cairns continued his run and a cross to the back post from Barrie was headed home from six yards for a dream start.

The lead was doubled in the 13th minute when Chris Beaton played the ball through to Greig Tulloch and his shot, from 12 yards out, found the top left-hand corner of the Peebles
net.

It should have been three shortly after when a ball from Chris Barrie found Stephen Barrie down the right and his cross across the box was met by Tulloch, but his shot just sneaked over the bar.

Two-nil down and finding it hard to get into the game Peebles picked up two cautions, for a late challenge and then dissent towards the referee, before Leith’s Neil Lowson was also booked for dissent. The first half then fizzled out with few chances for either side

Peebles started the second half the better team but still chances were few and far between until Craig Edgar latched on to a long ball from Michael MacKenzie, but his shot was well wide of the home goal.

At the other end, a free kick from Chris Barrie was well saved by Kris Lennie and the resultant corner kick saw a header from Steven Lynch go close.

The lead was extended to three in the 60th minute when Peebles were caught in possession and a short pass-back to keeper Kris Lennie was intercepted by Lachlan Thom. He slotted the ball away to put an end to any hope of a Peebles revival.

Edgar had a half-chance in the 65th minute after a mix-up in the home defence saw him one-on-one with Iain Gordon in the Leith goal, but the keeper saved well to ensure that he kept his clean sheet.
