In what turned out to be a free-scoring encounter, David Fraser put Legion ahead by drilling away a shot after linking up well with Callum Hope.
Scott Duncan then grabbed a second for Hawick, beating the Rhymers’ keeper with a well-struck drive.
The remainder of the first half failed to conjure up any more goals.
Seconds into the second period, however, Earlston reduced the leeway.
Play continued at a brisk pace and Hope struck for Legion with a chipped shot from 35 yards out. Earlston then put themselves back in the picture with an excellent headed goal after a free kick.
More was to come from the Rhymers, though, as they went on to equalise with a penalty.
