MAURICE GORDON reports from Whitestone Park
PEEBLES grabbed a late equaliser to earn themselves a well-deserved draw against Preston Athletic in an entertaining encounter.
The visitors posed a threat after 12 minutes when a Darren McGlashan through-ball sent Phil Hobbins racing forward. Hobbins attempted to chip the ball over John Nisbet , but the Peebles keeper brought off an excellent two-handed save.
Clear-cut scoring chances became few and far between at both ends until Peebles twice came close to breaking the deadlock in quick succession on the half-hour mark.
From a Michael Holness corner-kick Andrew Williamson struck the crossbar with a header, the rebound falling to Ronald Fleming out on the right, who crossed it to Steven Galloway – and he was just off target with an angular header from 10 yards.
Shortly afterwards, Preston keeper Ross Gilpin foiled Michael McKenzie and just before half-time, after collecting a Frazer Henderson pass, McGlashan fired narrowly over from long range.
Preston who opened the scoring in the 53rd minute. After latching onto a hefty clearance from the Athletic keeper, Frazer Henderson coolly lobbed the ball over Nisbet.
Then, after a neat Peebles build-up, Nicky Cairns was just off-target with a good effort, while Nisbet foiled Henderson with a fine save.
Back again came the Rovers and, from a Galloway pass, Ronald Fleming’s blistering shot was saved by Gilpin at full stretch.
Peebles got back on level terms after 83 minutes when a loose ball broke kindly to Scott Watson, who beat Gilpin all ends up with a terrific shot into the top corner of the Preston net.
The hosts came close to grabbing a winner two minutes from full-time when Gary Knox fired the ball just inches over the Preston crossbar with a free-kick attempt.
