SELKIRK’s Allan Smith has thanked the Borders Academy of Sport Excellence for helping him achieve his move to Dunfermline Athletic.

The 17-year-old former Gala Fairydean striker signed a two-year deal with the Fife club after spending a studying year at Borders College, and scored two goals on his SPL Under-19 league debut against St Mirren in August.

He has remained in the starting line-up ever since, alongside Earlston goalkeeper Ryan Goodfellow, another BASE graduate.

Smith said: “When I was told I was getting a contract I was delighted.

“It meant my whole time on the BASE football course at Borders College was worthwhile and it gave me the opportunity to play the sport I love every day.

“All credit goes towards my college tutor Stevie McLeish for helping me get to where I am at the moment.”

McLeish added: “Allan was a joy to work with over the entire year.

“His dedication to improving his football performance and his determination to achieve his goals through completing the BASE Football course was evident from the start.

“Allan deserves his chance at Dunfermline Athletic and I am sure he will work hard to break into the first team squad.”
