Mattinson’s heroics not enough for Legion

Chirnside United 7

Langholm Legion 5

BAL DIVISION A

LANGHOLM Legion’s Brian Mattinson scored five goals, but still ended up on the losing side as Chirnside United triumphed in this 12-goal thriller.

In one of only five Border Amateur League games to survive the weather, Jack Windram and Danny Hoyle struck for the Comrades Park men before half-time, but Langholm responded through Mattinson’s first goal, a low shot from the edge of the box.

Chirnside responded immediately through two quickfire goals from Windram to complete his hat-trick.

However, Langholm then produced a stirring comeback through four more strikes from Mattinson.

Among the quartet of goals were two successful penalties, the second also resulting in the sending-off of Chirnside’s Ryan Purves for handball on the goalline.

Down to 10 men and 5-4 behind, United looked destined for defeat.

However, Keir Blaikie notched a double and Adam Turner’s left-footed effort sealed an incredible win.
