WALLS CUP FINAL

STEVEN SOMERVILLE reports from Woodside Park

This game was a battle right from the start with local rivals Jed Legion and Ancrum clashing for the third time this season.

Ancrum had the upper hand in league form with two wins from two and Jed had a lot to prove.

Legion started well and there were only five minutes on the clock when, after a fine through-ball, Marshall found the feet of Barrie Melrose, who slotted the ball past Sean Jack in the Ancrum goal. However, offside was the call.

Ancrum responded immediately and a fine ball through the defence to Clark Scott saw the former Jed Legion player just tipping the ball over the bar.

Ancrum were starting to find holes in the Jed defence and a well-worked move ended with Andrew MacDonald’s power-drive of a shot going straight through a crowded penalty area and somehow finding its way into the back of the net to put Ancrum in front.

Their heads were up now and, if it were not for some fine heroics from John Wiffin and goalkeeper Steven Henderson, they could have been further in front.

Jed looked dazed and Ancrum attacks were becoming a regular feature with captain Grant Robinson catching the eye with some brilliant mazy runs before Scott Storrie’s thunderous shot was again saved by the in-form Henderson in the Jed goal.

The second half saw Ancrum start where they left off, with goalscorer MacDonald causing problems with another fine shot, however, again Henderson was up to the task.

Both teams made use of all their subs and the game did change, with Jed starting to gather momentum. However, they just lacked the killer touch in front of goal with possession being wasted too much at the last hurdle.

The game was nearing the end and there were some tired legs out on the pitch.

Could Jed steal an equaliser? Well, they certainly tried, but Wiffin’s free kick sailed just wide and the referee signalled full time, leaving Ancrum to lift the 2012 Walls Cup.
