High fives at Melrose for Italy and crocks
Melrose footie fest kids
THE Melrose Festival Fives had a truly European Football Championship feel this year as more than 100 children from the town and the surrounding area adopted the teams playing in the current Euro 2012 Championship for the annual Fairplay Football award.
The wet weather failed to dampen the enthusiasm and skill shown by the 15 teams from P1 to P7 competing throughout the day. Italy – William Seeley, Andrew Wilkinson, Simon Lafferty, Harry Brown, Aaron Neil and Calum Folan – prevailed by ensuring they showed courtesy towards players and the referee at all times and working hard in every game.
The annual adults’ tournament allowed the old men of Melrose to try and relive the glory days of their youth.
A handicap system was introduced this year, which made each group game exciting. The aptly named Old Crocks crept out of their league to shock the pre-tournament favourites the Gibby Boys in the semi-final before beating professional outfit SLB Scotland (who had seen off the Melrosian’s Muppets) 4-2 in the final.
