EoS FIRST DIVISION

JOHN CLAYTON reports from Recreation Park

AFTER doing most of the initial pressing, Gala took the lead in the sixth minute when Paul Young collected the ball in midfield and flighted it into the path of Jack Hay, who ran on to slide it under the advancing James McQueen.

At the other end, Brian McEwan had a good run that ended with a firmly struck shot that was held by Fairies keeper Elliot Turnbull.

Grant Gass then received a long pass on the left side of the box that he tapped past McQueen towards the empty net, but an Ormiston defender managed to clear the ball away from danger.

Ormiston equalised after a good move involving Peter Liddell and Craig Fisher resulted in a chance for Richard Fairnie. His shot was blocked by Andrew Brown at the expense of a corner, but from the resulting set-piece, Turnbull failed to hold the ball under pressure and Scott McCarry flicked it home for the equaliser.

Gary Lothian had a chance to regain the lead just before the break when he received the ball on his own and then cut inside a defender before shooting, but McQueen parried the shot behind for a corner.

Shortly after the restart, Grant Gass played a diagonal ball to Jay Wilson, who cut in from the far touchline and then ran through the middle of the Ormiston defence to shoot beyond McQueen for Gala’s second goal.

Ormiston went close with a shot across the face of the goal by Fairnie before they equalised in bizarre fashion. From a corner on the left, the ball was hacked clear, but hit Brown in the face and bounced into the net for the equaliser.

Midway through the half, Johnstone blatantly obstructed Hay and then kicked the ball away to receive a second yellow card and Ormiston were reduced to 10 men. From the resulting free kick, Ross Glass picked up the clearing header, but his shot flew over the Ormiston crossbar.

Then Ormiston took an attacking long throw that McCarry headed goalwards and it just clipped the top of the bar.

Deep into injury time, Gala also had a thrown-in which Ryan Sclater propelled towards the near post where Gass flicked the ball on to an alert Hay, who volleyed the ball into the roof of the net for a late winner.

Gala Fairydean: E. Turnbull, R. Glass (R. Sclater), A. Brown, G. Lothian, C. McBride, P. Young, A. Jackson (R. Hewitson), G. Gass, G. Rossi, J. Wilson, J. Hay.
