PEEBLES gave a good account of themselves against promotion-chasing Gretna despite not getting a decent rub of the green.

Gretna got off to a dream start when Gavin Reilly sent over an inviting right-wing cross to the far Rovers post and Dale Urey could only turn the ball past keeper Bruce Callan for an unfortunate own goal.

Peebles came close to grabbing an equaliser four minutes later as a Keith Harper header flew inches wide.

Dean Rea and Ian Cummersky both came close to increasing Gretna’s lead with good efforts before they scored their second in the 40th minute from a controversial penalty award – David Reynard tumbling despite there seeming to be no contact from Crawford Leslie. Rea gave Callan no chance from the spot.

After the break, the hosts increased their lead with a peach. After collecting a Reilly pass Daniel Rayson made a menacing run into the box and coolly chipped the exposed Callan.

Two minutes into injury-time, Peebles’ Nicky Cairns was harshly sent off after picking up a second yellow.

Gretna had the last word, Renyard hitting the woodwork from 14 yards.
