Gala travelled to Edinburgh to take on Fernieside FC in the Scottish Amateur Cup at Peffermill on Saturday.

It didn’t take long for the first goal to come, a free-kick for Gala from the right hand corner of the box was drilled in by Des Sutherland for Shaun Hardie to poke home from five yards in the first minute of the game.

Fernieside were a big physical team and were always going to be a threat from set pieces. The equaliser came from a corner aimed at two big lads, the ball flashed in and was met in unfortunate circumstances by Gala’s own Stu Harkness.

Gala went ahead again, this time Sutherland smashing home direct from a free-kick.

Another set-piece from Fernieside saw their big No6 rise above everyone to bullet home from four yards before Brad Lochrie gave Rovers the lead again when tucking away a fumble from the Fernieside keeper, making the score 3-2 in the visitors’ favour at half-time.

The second half began with an early goal from the city lads, and with Gala struggling to retain their first-half style, the Fernieside winner came from a corner which was cleared only as far as the edge of the box, played back in and headed past Jamie Shiel.

GFR threw on Scott Nightingale to try to find an equaliser. They had two very good calls for penalties denied late in the game, but were unable to find the goal needed to reach extra time.

Next up for the Ams is Saturday’s Border Cup quarter-final v Stow, 2pm – venue TBC.
