Football round up: Selkirk and Gala defeated, Vale of Leithen move to top of Lowland League

Selkirk exited the Image Printers Cup this afternoon following a 2-0 defeat to Gretna 2008 at Yarrow Park.

The Souters could only name goalkeeper Dan Hatifled on the bench and were bombarded for long spells of the first half, but held their visitors at 0-0 at half time, thanks to a series of saves by Gregor Amos.

Alan Inglis low free kick broke Selkirk’s resolve just two minutes after the break and David Raynard added second with 15 minutes remaining.

Selkirk boss Mike McKinnon said: “We competed well despite our lack of numbers.

“We always knew we were up against it with the likes of David Battle and Ryan McManus having to play out of position, but I thought Ryan was outstanding.”

At Netherdale, Gala Fairydean Rovers slumped to their third Lowland League defeat in a row as Preston Athletic triumphed 4-1.

Ryan Strachan opened the scoring on 16 minutes but Stuart Noble equalised for the hosts four minutes later.

However, Steven Philip restored Athletic’s lead just before half time and despite an improved showing in the second half, and late goals by Gary McCormack and James Reilly sealed Preston’s win.

Vale of Leithen go clear at the top of the Lowland League after a 1-0 win at East Kilbride.

In the Border Amateur League Division A, Hawick Waverley beat Tweeddale Rovers 3-0 while Gala Fairydean Rovers Amateurs drew 4-4 with Chirnside.

And in the Border Cup quarter finals, Stow defeated Greenlaw 4-2.
