STUART REID reports from Warner Park

KELSO UNITED threw away a two-goal lead against the Fishermen at Warner Park on Sunday.

The travelling Tweedsiders got going straight from kick-off, two early free kicks causing problems in the Eyemouth goalmouth.

Some great interplay by Mark Lockhart and Chris Black found Sean Angus on the left and his pinpoint cross saw Steven Tait’s diving header zoom into the back of the net.

Eyemouth had a couple of tame efforts before Jordan Lauder’s shirt was tugged by the home defender on the half-hour mark and the ref pointed to the spot. Lauder picked himself up to slot the ball home.

Just when Kelso thought they were cruising, however, Gary McBride was picking the ball out of the net after Kelso failed to clear their lines and Eyemouth’s Ross Aitchison took full advantage.

Just before half-time, Johnny Simpson brought the home side level when once again Kelso failed to clear away the ball.

The equaliser had lifted Eyemouth and after the restart McBride was in action again with a fine save. Chris Black sent a free kick and then a header over the bar for Kelso as they pressed, but it was Eyemouth who went in front on 67 minutes when Sean Simpson added to their tally with a fine strike.

After having two sent off last week Kelso saw themselves down to 10 men when a harsh red card was shown to Lockhart for a challenge on the home keeper.

Following a two-year absence due to injury, Gary Mabon was welcomed back in the Kelso line-up for the last 15 minutes, but with the one-man advantage Eyemouth stretched their lead when a long range effort from Stuart Coyle flew into the net.

Just a minute later, Coyle won a freekick. McBride failed to hold onto the ball and George Windram nipped in to make it 5-2.

Kelso kept giving their all with Lauder having a good shift up front.

Jonathon Brown and Jamie Hogarth both came close in the last 10 minutes, but Eyemouth were sitting comfortably and held out for the win.
