Gala Fairydean Rovers fielded half a dozen new faces for the forthcoming Lowland League campaign in the club’s first pre-season warm-up on Friday evening.
But the new blood could not prevent the home side suffering a three-goal defeat to Division Two side East Fife.
The Fifers got revenge for their 4-2 defeat when they officially opened the, now listed, Netherdale grandstand 50 years ago – but this was all about both sides getting 90 minutes under their belts.
Alan Walker opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the sixth minute and shortly after the half-hour mark, Jamie Beaton doubled the lead by finishing off a slick passing move.
Gala battled hard to get back into the game in the second half and their best chance fell to former Fifers frontman Sean Paliczka. But he was foiled by a last-ditch block tackle by East Fife player-boss Gary Naysmith.
And in the 78th minute, 22-year-old Jon McShane wrapped up the scoring for the visitors with a tap-in from close range.
Gala manager Steven Noble commented: “It was an excellent opening-game workout for both teams.”
