Clinical finish secures win for Newtown

JED welcomed Border Amateur League Division A outfit Newtown to Woodend for this Waddell Cup first round tie last Saturday.

Despite the scoreline, a young Jed squad acquitted themselves well against an experienced Newtown team.

The visitors were quickly into their stride and went ahead midway through the half, Liam Burke lobbing young Jed goalkeeper Robbie Elder.

They were soon further ahead when Gary Hastie pounced on some sloppy defending to poke home from 10 yards.

Jed reduced the deficit just after the break, Daniel Chandler capitalising on poor goal keeping to stab home from a corner. The same player then tried his luck from 25 yards and his effort came back off the visiting keeper but unfortunately for Jed the rebound evaded Luke Spiteri and the ball was cleared to safety.

Spiteri then came close to an equaliser with a header but his effort went just wide of the upright.

The visitors stepped up a gear and scored three goals in the space of 15 minutes midway through the half to secure their place in the next round. Captain Scott Leitch got two with one for Trevor Shiells.

Barrie Melrose scored a second for Jed right at the death.
