Eyemouth United 3
Peebles Rovers 2
SOUTH OF SCOTLAND CHALLENGE CUP
MAURICE GORDON reports from Warner Park
IN A hectic cup tie which produced a thrilling finish – with three goals coming in the last six minutes – Eyemouth just edged out a battling Peebles side.
The hosts were the first to pose a threat when, from a Scott Adamson corner-kick, Keiran Ainslie sent the ball just over the crossbar with a spectacular header.
Peebles replied with Michael McKenzie and Peter Conaghan being narrowly off-target with good efforts before Eyemouth’s Jonathan Waugh was sent off following an off-the-ball incident with Conaghan.
But the Fishermen came close to breaking the deadlock five minutes before half-time when, from a Keiran Ainslie pass, Steven Shennan made a menacing run into the box, only for his shot to come back off the Rovers left-hand post and away to safety.
Peebles posed a threat in the first minute of the second half when Craig Edgar struck the crossbar with a header from close in, but it was Eyemouth who opened the scoring after 50 minutes from the penalty spot. In trying to protect his face, Ronald Fleming instinctively handled a well-struck shot from Graham Windram inside the Peebles box.
Then after Fleming had been sent off, Shennan gave the diving John Nisbet no chance with a well-taken penalty kick.
Shortly afterwards, Nisbet foiled Leigh Walker with a fine save, before Eyemouth added a second goal when a Keiran Ainslie through-ball sent Shennan racing into the Peebles box. His shot was well saved by Nisbet at close range, but the ball broke back kindly to the Eyemouth man, who slotted it home from close in.
Rovers finally reduced the leeway four minutes from full-time from the penalty spot.
After Windram had up-ended Greig Shortreed just inside the Eyemouth box, Craig Edgar coolly gave the diving Sofi Omari no chance with a perfectly-placed spot kick.
After looking down and out, Peebles were sensationally back on level terms on 90 minutes when Bobby Nwanze neatly flicked the ball past a helpless Omari with a header from six yards.
But, just when it seemed that this game would go into extra-time, Eyemouth grabbed the winner when substitute Richard Baxendale headed the ball home.
Peebles Rovers: J. Nisbet, Ron Fleming, G. Shortreed, Ray Fleming, A. Williamson, M. McKenzie, P. Conaghan, N. Cairns, C. Edgar, G. Knox (D. Knox), S. Watson (C. Nwanze).
