Agnew enjoys glittering awards
POINTS meant prizes last weekend for two Border-based eventers who jumped to the top of the Scottish league tables during 2006.
Hendersyde's Charlotte Agnew and Kelso-based Kiwi Caroline Powell picked up awards for being the highest points winners in the 25-years-or-under and senior levels at the BE Scotland Awards dinner, held at Dunblane last
weekend.
A former member of the GB junior three-day event team, 19-year-old Agnew is currently reading English at Edinburgh University. But throughout the summer she has travelled the length and breadth of Britain, competing at some of the most challenging courses in the country.
The Agnew family, who host the annual Hendersyde Horse Trials, were well-represented at the glitzy affair last weekend and Charlotte's mum Livy presented awards for intro and pre-novice Scottish Champions – the latter award being won by Nenthorn's Jenny Christie.
Mrs Agnew told TheSouthern: "The whole evening was lovely and we are all so proud of Charlotte, who has worked really hard with the horses over the summer.
"Les (Smith) did a wonderful job organising the evening where there were over 200 people –
double last year – ensuring that people who have supported Scottish eventing over many years, either as sponsors or organisers, were awarded the recognition that they deserved."
Charlotte, the eldest of three Agnew daughters, has recently purchased R.H. Rocket in New Zealand and the pair are looking towards the 2012 Olympics to make their mark.
Mrs Agnew added: "Rocket has been shaping up really well and they ended the season on a real high with a third place on an open novice course, so barring disasters, everyone is quite positive about the future. Charlotte will be concentrating on her dressage throughout the winter and is looking
forward to picking up where she left off next March."
Charlotte also received The Menzies Rose Bowl for being third in the leading Scottish rider at Blair Castle in August where she came fifth in the CCI*** event on Little Beau.
Powell also collected the novice champion award as well as being the rider of the top points-winning horse on the Scottish circuit and the highest BE points-winning horse bred in Scotland.
