BUCCLEUCH Bowling Club got the rub of the green last weekend in the final of the James McLean Trust and Local Sports Councils' Sporting Questions, held in the Lauderdale Hotel.
The seven qualifying teams from the area heats were Chirnside Football Club, Melrose Rugby Club, Torwoodlee Golf Club, Peebles Swimming Club, Buccleuch Bowling Club, Kelso Golf Club and Kelso Tennis Club.
The quiz compiler and questionmaster was H
enry Gray.
There were two rounds of questions, worth a total of 74 points, with the two top teams qualifying for a separate 'Question of Sport' type quiz for cheques of £250 and £100 respectively.
The cheques will be presented at the Celebration of Sport Awards dinner at the Cross Keys Hotel, Kelso, on Saturday, November 15.
The scores after the first two rounds were as follows: 1, Buccleuch Bowlers 61pts; 2 (equal), Kelso Golf Club and Kelso Tennis Club 55pts; 4, Chirnside Football Club 54pts, 5, Peebles Swimming Club 53pts; 6, Torwoodlee Golf Club 48pts; 7, Melrose Rugby Club 37pts.
The tie-breaker play-off between Kelso's golf and tennis clubs resulted in the latter serving 11 ace answers with the golf club just under par at 10.
In the final, the tennis club led all the way through to the final round, into which they took a 34-32 advantage.
The final round, worth 20 points, was on dates and venues for the summer Olympics.
The not-so-green Buccleuch bowlers scored top marks of 20 with the tennis club suffering a date double fault and a missed venue, and scoring 17.
What a comeback! It could not have been more exciting, with the bowlers deservedly winning by 52-51.
