Wee Wonders tee off
YOUNG golfers in the Borders are being invited to tee-off for the 2008 HSBC Wee Wonders Golf Championship.
A local qualifier will be held at Lilliardsedge Golf Course on Sunday, June 8, and names are being taken now.
Scottish and British and Irish Lions rugby legend Gavin Hastings OBE was at Murrayfield Golf Club last week to help kick-start the launch.
He said: "As the rugby and football seasons come to a close, I am turning my attention to my preferred summer sports pastime of golf.
"There are so many opportunities for young Scottish children to get into this great game, none more so than the HSBC Wee Wonders Championships, which encourages both active participation and healthy competition for the nation's youngsters."
The competition, for five to 12-year-old boys and girls, is supporting the next generation of golfers by giving them the opportunity to play without the need for handicaps or membership at a golf club.
It continues to lead the way in grassroots golf, attracting thousands of aspiring golfers each year. Competitors have 36 shots to get as far around a par-three golf course as possible, and place a flag where their final shot comes to rest. Winners in each category proceed to one of the regional finals in Scotland, and if successful, through to the grand final being held at St Andrews in August, where they will compete against the best youngsters from all over the UK.
Alasdair Good, founder of Wee Wonders said: "We have to look ahead to the Ryder Cup of 2014 at Gleneagles and think there is every chance that HSBC Wee Wonders might just provide the next great Scottish golfer to take over Monty's mantle."
Entry into the HSBC Wee Wonders Championships costs just £8, and there are still 15 local qualifying events across Scotland open for registration.
