ALTHOUGH trailing at the moment as outsiders, Gala Fairydean are still involved in the race for promotion into the East of Scotland Premier League, writes John Slorance.
Fairydean have a lot of ground to cover and on Saturday, the Netherdale side could take a big stride in doing this by gaining full points in their away clash with Kelso United.
The Tweedsiders are anxious to improve their lowly league position and w
ill be going all out to halt the 'Dean in their tracks.
Looking ahead to the game, United manager Jim Mclean told The Southern: "Fairydean will be wanting revenge, as we beat them at Gala. They had most of the play but we got the result, and we'll be looking to do the same again."
United are minus Chris Baillie, but parade new signings Michael Pentland, formerly of Tynecastle, and local youngster Graeme Kellington. Darren Gillan returns from suspension.
Fairydean co-manager Bryan Templeton told us: "We really need three points, but will have to start taking our chances. Last week we missed a barrowload, and we can't afford to do that.
"The game ended up being a farce, due to the sendings-off. We lost all our shape after Hawick went down to nine men and went all gung ho. This did nothing for us, and we couldn't even score a goal.
"Kelso have had some good runs in the cups but haven't done that well in the league but they sure will be wanting to make it hard for us."
Fairydean have Shane Greene suspended.
Talking of his side's Victoria Park meeting with near neighbours Peebles, Vale of Leithen co-manager Robbie Clark said: "Team selection is a bit of a headache. We had a few players missing against Edinburgh City last week, but the boys who came in did a great job.
"We are at full strength this week, and nobody is guaranteed a place. It's a good problem to have, though.
"This game has been delayed a couple of times and it will be great to get it played. It's always good to play against Peebles."
Peebles boss Mark Lamb added: "We had a good friendly match against Selkirk last Saturday and managed a 1-0 win and that has given us a lift for the Vale match.
"Vale have had some good results as well as some poor ones this season. I am not sure what to make of them but will find this out on Saturday.
"We are still in the melting pot to do something in the league and a win over the Vale would certainly help our cause."
The Whitestone Park side are minus the suspended Michael Moffat.
Lowly Hawick Royal Albert travel to face high-flying Civil Service Strollers at Muirhouse.
Hawick's Brian Stavert, Derrick Stavert, Malcolm Cooper and Michael Clark are all banned following their recent sendings-off against Gala Fairydean.
In the premier league, Selkirk tangle with Edinburgh University away from home. The Souters are in need of a win and Selkirk manager Fraser Lothian said: "Our league position is disappointing. It's up to us to sort this out and we are capable of doing this.
"The University are a very well-organised side and play good football. But it is a great park at Peffermill, and that will suit us."
Selkirk welcome back Craig Livingston and Ian Potts.
