With the World Sporting Championship taking place at Lakenheath in Suffolk over the weekend and all the other demands on shooters resources, Braidwood Sporting Clays was pleased to get a turnout of 65 guns for Sunday's SCTA/CPSA 100 registered sporting event.
Many of the big Scottish names were missing from the field, leaving all to play for in the quest for team scores and classifications.
Fortunately, the heavy showers and poor conditions forecast earlier in the week didn't materialise, although win
d did play its mischievous part with some of the targets and there was one short downpour half way through.
By far the best score of the day was shot by Lancashire's AA shooter, J. P. Swire, who notched up an incredible 95, a full nine targets clear of Braidwood's Gordon Boertien (Lockerbie) and James Somerville, a well-deserved event high gun.
A Class fell to Stuart Dawson (Bedlington) on 85, just a single target ahead of Jack Carlyle (Dalton), and top Scots lady shot Edith Barnes, visiting from Crieff.
Northumbrian-based Nathan Oldham lifted B Class honours on 81. Roy McCowan (Gretna) was runner-up on 79, but perhaps the biggest grin of the day belonged to Colin Scott (Hawick) who also shot a superb 81 to head up C Class ahead of clubmate Scott Livingston (Edinburgh), who took second place on 78.
On-form Dawson also won the pool shoot after taking part in a play-off with all those others who had managed a perfect eight during the day. John Malone (Melrose) was pleased with his second place ahead of Nathan Oldham in third.
The next club competition takes place on Sunday, July 13 when it's the turn of Edinburgh's John Craig to defend the Macdonald Cup.
Entries from 11.30am-12.30pm, shooting from noon.
