THE Peebles Three Bridges cross-country races got the Borders athletics season off to a good start on Sunday with 30 entrants in the youths' race and 28 in the open event.
An excellent crowd attended and the weather was first class. The youths' event, run over 1.5 miles, saw last man away, Ross Mathieson from Lasswade, giving up to two minutes 15 seconds start, come storming through the field to take the first prize of £40 in 10.19 from Lindsay Gordon of Lasswade and local lad Scott Adkin of Peebles, with three seconds covering the three of them.

The open race, over three miles, was dominated by Hazel Sutherland of Peebles, who took the £100 first prize in 21.46 from a fast-finishing Chris Russell from Glenrothes and Ryan O'Hare, Edinburgh.

The next Borders Athletics meeting is in Earlston on May 31. Entries close on May 24. Details on www.bordersathletics.co.uk or from Ernie Blair on 01668 283642.
