ONE out of one then, for Andy Robinson.
Not a sparkling performance, but Robinson has always said he subscribes to the art of winning rugby.
He was quite taken aback when he went into the press conference afterwards. After all, here he was giving Scotland a much-needed win and he expected smiles on the faces of the media.
Instead, he was greeted with a sullen bunch of hacks who were not at their happiest.
“That was a very good performance against a quality team and we beat them comfortably,” he said.
“I think what we’ve got to do here is pat the boys on the back because there has been some very good individual performances.
“We completely dominated the scrum and it was frustrating to give away penalties. That sort of thing can break up your rhythm. But you’ve got to say to the team ‘well done’ because we’ve performed well.
“We know we’ve got to make improvements, but we should have smiles on our faces and it looks a little bit doom and gloom at the moment.
“We’re going to work hard to improve, but let’s enjoy the moment and the win and look forward to next Saturday.”
Around 22,000 supporters were inside Murrayfield Stadium, which is about what you would expect for this kind of friendly against a team we expected to beat.
To be honest, looking at the autumn tests from the recent past, a crowd of around half that would be the norm.
There will certainly be many more there this Saturday for the visit of Australia and that really is the real test of the three. Can Robinson’s men produce a winning performance against a team far better than Fiji?
I actually think they can and so do the Scottish players.
Scotland has a habit of turning it on against the big teams. There’s nothing quite like a game against the Aussies to focus the mind and I think we will see a different Scotland step up another couple of gears for this game.
I thought Chris Cusiter was excellent as captain and penetrated the Fiji defence several times.
Johnnie Beattie at No.8 played his best game for Scotland and thoroughly deserved his try.
Phil Godman is getting better – certainly his kicking has improved. He needs to convince a lot of people that he is still the right man for the job, but for now he is literally our only real option at that position.
Sean Lamont’s defensive play was immaculate, but I would have liked to have seen more options in attack from all the backs. They had plenty of territory and possession and should have done more with it.
Great to see Alex Grove, Kyle Traynor and Richie Vernon win their first caps.
