YOUNG speed stars from a Borders high school were on track for success on Saturday at the ScottishPower Secondary Schools Road Relay Championships.
Hundreds of Scotland's finest young athletes were put through their paces at the event which was held in Grangemouth. Pupils aged between 12 and 13 from across the country came together to compete for gold at Grangemouth Sports Stadium for the final event of the ScottishPower athletics calendar.

The cold weather didn't put off the inspiring youngsters and Peebles High scooped first place in the first year boys' race, beating Glasgow School of Sport and Hutcheson's Grammar with a time of 16 minutes and 49 seconds.

ScottishPower has been encouraging kids across Scotland to take part in athletics over the past four years and, in conjunction with the Scottish Schools' Athletics Association and scottishathletics, has assisted more than 30,000 young athletes through sponsoring the events.

Jim Paterson, sales and marketing director of ScottishPower, said: "We have really enjoyed sponsoring these athletic events and ScottishPower hopes that some of these kids will be representing their country in years to come.

"We are proud to be part of their athletic achievements and want young people to know that their efforts are well-recognised. By taking part in sports, instead of wasting energy watching TV or playing computers, means that not only are they keeping fit and healthy – they are also playing their part in helping the environment."

Jamie McDonald, scottishathletics youth development manager, added: "Well done to all athletes who took part on the day and to the supporters who braved the chilly weather conditions. This particular event is always an exciting one and it is the finale to the Scottish Schools events in 2008.

"We are extremely grateful for all the support ScottishPower has provided. Thousands of up-and-coming athletes have benefited from competing in these events and it's great to see them enjoying a sport they love."
