IT WAS off to Fort William again last weekend for the third round of the NPS downhill series, writes Ian Linton.
The track had taken a beating after the World Cup race at the beginning of the month, but the maintenance crew had been hard at work, which carried on throughout the weekend, as the dry conditions didn’t help to hold the track together.
Practice on Saturday was rather hairy at times. Although the sun was shining, the wind was quite strong, blowing the riders off their line choices and into the rough and rocky parts where they just didn’t want to be.
Race day itself saw the sun come out again and the temperature rise with virtually no wind.
Racing started on time and first on the track was the juvenile class.
After his surprising second place in the last round, George Gannicott was gunning for the win, and did just that by crossing the line 15 seconds faster than second-placed Philip Atwill. Sam Herd finished a second back in third.
Youth riders were on track next with local rider Lewis Buchanan looking to continue his winning ways.
Unfortunately, the Innerleithen trailblazer couldn’t quite manage it and was pipped into second place by Fraser McGlone, with less than half a second separating the two. Third place went to Fraser’s team mate Mark Scott.
Arran Gannicott was looking to make it a double for the Selkirk family, but it wasn’t to be, with Harry Heath taking the win, Arran taking second and Welshman Gareth Brewin in third.
