THE pre-term friendly games are now over, writes John Slorance.
And this coming weekend matters start in earnest in East of Scotland circles with the kick-off of another season.
The East programme opens with the League Cup competition, which is to be played off in mini-league sections.
Peebles Rovers and Gala
Fairydean find themselves in action before everyone else.
Due to a cricket match being played on the pastures of Whitestone Park on Saturday, their curtain-raiser clash has been switched to Friday evening.
Looking ahead to the game, Rovers manager Mark Lamb told TheSouthern: "It's a good opener for us, meeting Gala.
They have been relegated last season, but they are a big club, and it's always great to meet sides like them.
"I'ts Rovers 100th anniversary this year, so we are hoping to do really well – a win against Gala would be brilliant.
"I have made several new signings, including two footballers from Poland – brothers Peter and Martine Danielski.
"They have both played professional football in Poland, and I think they will be a great asset to the club. Neither of them are quite match fit yet but they have been shaping up well in training.
"The pair of them are based in Edinburgh and I am delighted to have snapped them up."
Rovers have also signed local boy Alec Lucas, ex-Edinburgh City striker Chris Gordon, plus Kevin Barr from Tollcross United, and highly rated youngster Paul Greenhill.
More than keen to impress following their plunge from the premier league, Fairydean are without teenage goalkeeper Chris Anderson, who is suspended.
Gala have local players Grant Gass and Andy Hardie in their ranks, as well as recent signings Ritchie Johnstone and Alan Cumming from Whitehill Welfare.
In another derby encounter, Hawick Royal Albert tackle Vale of Leithen at Albert Park.
Giving his views on his side's opening encounter, Albert team boss Murray Balloch said: "Last season was a disaster but I am looking for big things this season.
"The squad has strengthened considerably, and I am delighted with the calibre of the new faces I have brought in.
In the past, we have shown other sides far too much respect, but these days are over.
"We need to start being more arrogant and that's the attitude we shall be adopting against the Vale.
"Like ourselves the Vale are almost a brand new side, and Saturday's game should be interesting in many ways."
Hawick parade newcomers Nicky Ingram, James Davanna, Chris Adams, Raymond Baxter, Mark Skeley and Mike Smith, but are without regular striker Paul Laidlaw, who is injured.
Vale joint-managers Stuart Robertson and Jack Diamond have been more than busy fixing up new blood during the close season. Amongst the many newcomers poised to appear are Louis Montgomery, Chris Cassidy, Mark Brown, David Clarkson, Craig Dickson, and Michael MacHale.
Kelso United include new boys Elliot Turnbull, and Keith Lough from Kelso Thistle, plus Spittal Rovers' Stuart Wright in their squad for their home battle with Lothian Thistle.
Manger Peter McNulty said: "I hear that Lothian have been spending a lot of money bringing in new players and have a big pool.
"But you can only play 11 on the day.
"I am happy with the way things have gone in our pre-season friendlies, as we are unbeaten in five games.
"This is a confidence boost for us. We have also learned a lot from last season, so I shall be looking for a win on Saturday."
Selkirk hit the road to face Annan Athletic.
Results are always hard to get at Galabank, but the Souters, who have been boosted by the recent captures of twins Craig and Gary Lothian from Vale of Leithen, ex-Hawick Royal Albert 'keeper Gavin Watson, Gala Rovers Paul Hossack, and Michael Rommanes from Selkirk Victoria, will be going all out to prove a point or two.
