Kelso cricketer Ryan Flannigan has been selected to play for the Scottish Lions at the European Championships in the Netherlands next week.
Flannigan was part of the 25-man squad named in pre-selection earlier this month, but today, Cricket Scotland will announce the final 13 players to make the cut.
The young Borderer has enjoyed mixed fortunes since joining the squad – formerly the
Scotland A team – several months ago, but playing for Watsonians at club level, he's been making a bit of a name for himself in recent weeks.
Earlier this month he picked up his maiden century against relegation rivals Ferguslie and now he's keen to transfer his success with the Edinburgh club to the international stage.
This week, the 20-year-old is part of the Lions side playing Leicestershire in the 2nd XI Championship at Hinkley and yesterday, TheSouthern caught up with him moments before the start of play on day two.
He told us: "It's been a new and learning experience playing for the Lions and coming up against good players in England and overseas – it's a totally different level.
"I just got told about getting selected for the Europeans last week and it's a huge boost. It'll be great to get away and get some big games in against Holland, Ireland and Denmark.
"Really I'll just be hoping to get some runs in," he added before being whisked away to begin the day's play.
Coach Andy Tennant described Flannigan as one of the country's emerging young players and said he was pleased to have him represent the Borders in the side.
Speaking from the clubrooms at Hinkley, he told TheSouthern: "It's about developing young cricketers and bringing on the next generation of international players. It's an avenue for getting new players in and helping them progress to the national level.
"Ryan is one of the side's emerging young players and has the potential to be a great international batter.
"We've got limited resources, but Ryan's certainly one of the ones to watch out for in the future.
"It's a learning process for him at the moment. He's been good since he joined the squad, but his form has been in and out.
However, we'd expect that from someone at his stage. It's about becoming habitually successful and the time and effort he's putting in is paying off. He's technically very sound and has been targeted as a potential batter for the international side."
